Welcome Lydia Burwell!

Stephen Burwell, fiddler with Authentic Unlimited, is celebrating more than just a new single this week. He and his wife, Haley, are overjoyed to welcome their first child, a baby girl named Lydia.

Lydia Marie Burwell was born on January 18 at 7:47 in the morning, weighing in at 7 lbs, 5 ozs, and stretching out to 20″.

Dad says that all is well, and he and Haley are beside themselves at seeing Lydia for the first time.

“Haley and I are so excited, and feel so incredibly blessed to have our little girl here safe and sound! She is a precious gift from God. When we look into her eyes we can see His love in a new and special way.

We’re so thrilled to be starting this journey together. And…just maybe, we have another little fiddler in the world.

Many congratulations to the new parents, and a great big Bluegrass Today welcome to little Lydia!

Congratulations Stephen and Haley!

Stephen Burwell, fiddler with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Haley Rhea were married on Saturday, September 18 at Foothills Farm in Cosby, TN.

The late afternoon wedding had been scheduled as an outdoor affair, but heavy rain and soggy ground forced a change of plans.

Far from ruining their day, Stephen said that things turned out to exceed their earlier expectations.

“Last minute, family and friends moved everything inside, and it wound up being even better than we could’ve imagined. I would say it was a very intimate wedding. We had fun dancing, music, food, and most of all the people there dearest to us to celebrate! Haley and I both wanted a ceremony and reception that honored the Lord. I think we were blessed to have that and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

He even played his fiddle as Haley walked down the aisle.

Though Haley is not a musician – she is a hair stylist and makeup artist – Stephen says she is a big supporter of his music, and even tolerates hearing him sing. But she did not ask him to sing at their wedding.

The newlyweds will make their home in Sevierville, TN.

Congratulations and best wishes to Stephen and Haley!

Stephen Burwell engaged to Haley Rhea

Veteran fiddler, Stephen Burwell, is the latest professional bluegrass musician to announce his engagement. The Texas native will be marrying Haley Rhea of Sevierville, TN.

Burwell, known for his time as a member of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and more recently with Chosen Road, met his future bride-to-be last September at Doyle’s festival in Denton, NC. There to twin fiddle with Matt Flake and appear as a guest performer with Lawson’s band, Burwell noticed Rhea from the stage.

“It was love at first sight for me!” he expressed his feelings for Rhea.

“Haley is my wife’s sister,” Matt Flake interjected. “Our whole family was at the Denton festival and Stephen and I were on stage. He leaned over and said, ‘you see that girl sitting next to your wife?’ I said, ‘yea, that’s my sister-in-law.’ He said, ‘you’re gonna have to introduce me to her,’ and I said, ‘I already had that planned out.'”

With matchmaking in the works, things progressed quickly.

“I knew that I was going to ask her out,” Burwell admitted.

Rhea works as a hair and make-up stylist. Though not a picker, she is a big music supporter and enjoys bluegrass as well as other genres.

“We had our first date in October,” Burwell explained. “Everything has been great since that first date. She’s the sweetest thing.”

The professional musician soon knew that he had met his person. Burwell plotted his proposal with the aid of Haley’s sister, Betsy Flake.

“We arranged to have family pictures taken at a friend of Haley’s in the Smokies. It was beautiful. It worked out great because we already had a photographer there. I waited until Haley wasn’t looking, then Betsy handed me the ring. Thankfully, she said yes.”

Rhea shared, “Stephen is a huge blessing in my life, and I thank God for all the things big and small that came together and allowed me to meet him in Denton. He is truly an answered prayer. A prayer that God answered exceedingly above what I could have imagined. I absolutely could not be more excited to marry him!”

Burwell, who grew up in Seattle, was homeschooled. At age eight, his parents enrolled him for classical violin lessons at church. Once he was introduced to fiddle tunes, he was forever changed. Sold on bluegrass, he took fiddle lessons for four years from Washington instructor, Pete Martin. As he grew and became more proficient, he played in multiple bands, including Shannon Slaughter and County Claire before joining Quicksilver.

“I had met Eli Johnston at IBMA. When Doyle was looking for a fiddle player, Eli threw my name out and I got to audition.”

Burwell traveled with Lawson for more than five years. In May 2020, he stepped away from that position to focus on studio work in Nashville.

Now Burwell’s other big news is that he is returning to Quicksilver to play twin fiddles with Flake. Following Burwell and Rhea’s September wedding, Doyle with have twin fiddling brother-in-laws in his ensemble.

“I can’t wait to marry her,” Burwell concluded.

Fiddler Stephen Burwell has announced that he is stepping down from his position with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver after more than five years.

The talented bowman grew up near Galveston, Texas, but now makes his home in Nashville, where he hopes to make his way working in the city’s many recording studios.

Stephen says that his plans also include refining his technique and fiddle knowledge, on top of completing a solo project he has been working on for some time.

“I’m really looking forward to studying many different old school fiddlers and recording for people here in Nashville. I would love to be able to fill in with folks as well. Recording engineering has always fascinated me and I’ve been doing it since I was 17 or 18. I’d also like to take this time to learn more from other players and form my own musical identity. I love being on the road and traveling, so I’m not looking to get away from that.”

Here’s a quick video he made last fall for AcoustiCult, his take on the classic Snowflake Reel.

Anyone interested in working with Stephen can reach him through his Facebook page.

Christmas Bluegrass Toy Drives

I think we all enjoy buying toys for Christmas, even if we don’t have small children of our own. We can all recall the excitement of finding a new toy under the tree as children, and the fun of watching our children and grandchildren discover that same joy on Christmas Day.

Of course, there are always some children whose families don’t have the means to purchase gifts, and some children who are separated from loved ones at Christmas. There are Good Samaritan organizations who collect toys for such young folks almost anyplace you look, often the local fire, police, or service organizations. We found a couple going on this month with a specifically bluegrass flavor for people in southwest Virginia and central Tennessee.

There is one scheduled for this Saturday (December 12) in Galax, VA at Creek Bottoms Brews, sponsored by Camp B Chord, an outfit that will be familiar to anyone who attends the city’s Old Fiddlers Convention each summer. They can always be found there playing driving bluegrass into the wee hours of the mornings, in the key of B, don’t you know.

Music will be provided by a band of young bluegrass all-stars: Keith McKinnon from IIIrd Tyme Out, his brother Kevin, Jason Davis and Jamie Harper from Junior Sisk & Rambler’s Choice, and Eli Johnson and Stephen Burwell from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

There will be no charge to attend the show, other than a new toy which will be donated to the Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.

You can count on hearing some great music, and having a fun time with some of our top young grassers.

In addition, Bluegrass Underground and Cumberland Caverns are collecting toys for donation to the Toys for Tots Drive for the Warren County Rescue Squad in Tennessee. New toys and cash donations can be dropped off at Cumberland Caverns, or mailed to them at:

1437 Cumberland Caverns Road
McMinnville, TN 37110

Cash donation can also be made online.

Not only will you have the certainty of helping bringing some Christmas cheer to less-privileged children, each new toy or donation of $5 or more will also enter you into a drawing to win one of three prize packages for Bluegrass Underground tickets, along with accommodations and restaurant passes for shows in 2016.

To be entered in the drawings, toys or donations must be received by December 19.

Full details about the prize packages can be found online.

Stephen Burwell to Quicksilver

Doyle Lawson has announced Stephen Burwell as the newest member of Quicksilver, replacing Jason Barrie who departed the band this past weekend.

Doyle says…

“After nearly 6 years of having Jason Barie handling the fiddle duties for Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Jason has decided to pursue other interests. He is a devoted husband and father and wants to be home more to participate in his family’s activities. Jason is a wonderful person and musician. All of us at Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver will miss him and wish him the very best in the future.

Stephen Burwell is our new fiddle player and we look forward to having him as a part of the team. He is from Texas but lived in Washington state until his recent move to North Carolina.”

And Jason reports the familiar woe of the road musician as the cause for his decision.

“I have decided to slow down from the road in order to be home more with my family. Being a road musician, we tend to miss out on home life that still continues on when we are away. It’s time to be able to be around for more anniversaries, birthday’s, and kids activities that I’ve missed out on.

My time with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver has ended, but this isn’t the end of my musical journey or career, but rather the beginning of a new chapter still yet to be written. Music is a part of me and will be expressed some where some how. After all it’s in God’s hands and I’m looking forward to what He has planned for me. God has greatly blessed me along the way in this journey of music and life.

I greatly appreciate my nearly 6 years with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver and will be proud to say that I was a part of his band. Doyle and the band has been most gracious of my decision to leave and have wished me the best.”

And the Quicksilver train rolls on.
