Debut single from Phil Leadbetter

Pinecastle has released a debut single from Phil Leadbetter’s upcoming album, The Next Move.

It’s a new song from Paula Breedlove and Brad Davis called I’m A Ramblin’ Rolling Stone. Featured are John Cowan on lead vocals with Sam Bush singing harmony, recalling their days in Newgrass Revival during the 1970s-’80s.

Phil shared a few thoughts about the song, and how he came to assemble the all-star cast for his next project.

“Back when I was sick, I made myself a ‘bucket list’ of people I would like to record with one day if I was able to survive my cancer ordeal. At the time, things weren’t looking real good, so I just basically made up a ‘dream list’ with people I admired as musicians, friends and heroes. It was pretty much something I did just to take my mind of of reality from time to time.

Anyway, I became a survivor on Sept 10th 2013. As months went by, I gradually started picking again. Last Summer, I pulled out the list I made while I was sick. I told myself, ‘why don’t I pursue this and see if you can make this happen.’ No one at all turned me down.

Pinecastle was very receptive to my ideas. I started to solicit songs, and I was sent several by Paula Breedlove and Brad Davis. (They had written Love You Don’t Know that was on the first Grasstowne CD).  This one song, I’m A Ramblin’ Rolling Stone, really caught my ear. It reminded me of The Newgrass Revival.

John and Sam were both on my list. I called them up, and they were both happy to help out. Very, very proud just to have been able to record with two of my biggest musical heroes!!!”

Also on the track are Jake Stargel on guitar, Steve Thomas on fiddle, and Cory Walker on banjo. Phil, of course, lays down the resonator guitar, with Bush on mandolin and Cowan on bass.

The single can be purchased as a digital download from the Pinecastle web site. Radio programmers can download a copy from Airplay Direct.

No word yet on a release date for the full CD.

Sam Bush interview at Mandolin Cafe

For those in our midst who love all things mandolin (and NewGrass), Mandolin Cafe recently hosted an interactive interview with the musical force known as Sam Bush.

The interview began with the posting of a short biography of the icon, and embedded mp3 of a track from Sam’s latest CD (available as a free download from Sam’s website if you follow the directions given here), and followed by a Q&A interview where the questions were provided by readers of the Mandolin Cafe.

The questions are wide ranging, covering a number of topics including: the relationship between fiddle and mandolin playing, strings, Sam’s chop, leading a band, what’s on Sam’s iPod, Hoss, the Cardinals’ chances during the 2010 season, and many more.

The interview ends with a run down of Sam’s gear, and a discography. It is accompanied by several interesting youtube videos and a handful of pictures.

If you’re a Sam fan, you’ll want to check it out.
