Jessica Stiles signs off from Bluegrass Country

WAMU’s Bluegrass Country has been in the news quite a bit of late, with programming and personnel changes taking effect in recent weeks. Here’s one more change, unrelated to the large-scale ones announced in February.

Jessica Stiles, whose Stiles of Bluegrass aired for three hours on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the Bluegrass Country broadcast/cybercast feed, has stepped down from her recurring show. Stiles, who is also a bluegrass/Americana artist and author, says that she will need more time for her other projects, and sadly needs to let the radio side of her personality go for a time.

“It has been a pleasure to be on the airwaves at WAMU’s Bluegrass Country and get to work with Katy Daley and Lee Michael Dempsey and other fine programmers there. I appreciate the dedication of everyone at the station, and am thrilled the Bluegrass Country listening audience rose to the occasion to keep membership where it needs to be, thanks to community support.

Meanwhile, I have had to look at my schedule and make some hard choices, to step back from the every Saturday Stiles of Bluegrass show in order to focus more on my own musical stylings as a performer and recording artist, and to work on a book project I have undertaken about the well-loved Opry (and Hee Haw) star, Stringbean. So far, Mac Wiseman, Ramona Jones, Lester Armistead and Marty Stuart have been kind enough to share their stories with me for this project, Remembering String, and more is in the works.

Thanks to my listeners for sharing some of your Saturdays with me!”

Katy Daley at WAMU says that they are very sorry to see Jessica go, and that her spot will be filled with a rebroadcast of Lisa Kay Howard’s The Old Home Place program, initially aired on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m.

“Jessica was an asset to Bluegrass Country for the time she was here. She brought some different songs choices and a varied sound to the station, and the phones always lit up when she was on the air. Plus she was an avid promoter of our efforts on her social media.”

Stiles has an EP/CD, Little Darlin’, released earlier this year. It contains five tracks, mixing her original songs with some old time and bluegrass classics.

On another Bluegrass Country-related note… Katy mentioned that they finished their week of on-air fundraising with a total of more than $87,000 in pledges. They had been given an ambitious goal of $50,000, and are so thankful to both broadcast and online listeners who contributed to keeping the station going.

The fundraising continues through this week, with donations being accepted online or by phone.

And don’t forget your local/regional public radio stations who are conducting pledge drives this time of year. If they feature bluegrass and acoustic programming that you enjoy, consider making a small donation in support.

Little Darlin’ from Jessica Stiles

Jessica Stiles has announced the digital release of her new five song EP, Little Darlin’, with contributions from Mike Compton, Charlie Cushman, Josh Williams, Shad Cobb, and Kent Blanton. A pair of songs from the album will be made into a 45 RPM vinyl record, to hit later this year, but the digital files are available now in iTunes, and for radio programmers at Airplay Direct.

It’s an interesting mix of styles, with clear elements of bluegrass blended with folk, Americana and old time country music influences. One of them, Answer Him, is her own composition.

A number of guest vocalists are featured with Jessica here: Terry Eldridge, Nora Jane Struthers, Shawn Camp, and Lester Armistead.

Audio samples from the EP can be accessed via iTunes and Airplay Direct.

In addition to her writing, recording and performing work, Stiles hosts a weekly radio program on WAMU’s Bluegrass Country called Stiles of Bluegrass, airing Saturday mornings at 11:00 a.m. (eastern).

Stiles of Bluegrass replaces Lonesome Pine RFD on WAMU

When longtime radio host Carol Beaugard announced recently that she would be signing off from her Lonesome Pine RFD program on WFDU-FM in the New York City market, it also affected the schedule at WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, which streams bluegrass 24/7 online. Bluegrass Country had been replaying Carol’s show on Saturday mornings.

Beaugard, who has also performed with bluegrass groups in and around the Big Apple, has found success of late as an actress, and had to step away from her twice-weekly radio program to accommodate her new profession.

Unfortunately, WFDU has replaced Lonesome Pine RFD with a blues show, Sounds of Blue with host Bob Putignano, though they do still have bluegrass on Thursday mornings from 6:00-9:00 a.m. on Bluegrass & Beyond, hosted by Richard Haas.

On Bluegrass Country, Carol’s slot has been given to Jessica Stiles and her new show, Stiles of Bluegrass, airing from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at www.bluegrasscountry.org. Jessica is also a performer, and her latest single, Answer Him, is now available online.

Chris Teskey, Senior Music Producer at Bluegrass Country welcomes Stiles to their stable.

“We are excited to welcome Jessica Stiles to the Bluegrass Country broadcasting staff. Jessica has performed live music for us in the past, and we are pleased to have her join us as a program host.”

Her first show aired July 5, and you can tune in and hear Stiles of Bluegrass now every Saturday.

Answer Him from Jessica Stiles

Bluegrass/country/Gospel singer Jessica Stiles has dropped a first single from her upcoming vinyl EP, Little Darlin’.

It’s one she wrote called Answer Him, which features Jessica singing with harmony vocals from Lester Armistead of the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band and Terry Eldridge of The Grascals. Also assisting on this track are Mike Compton on mandolin, Charlie Cushman and Josh Williams on guitar, Shad Cobb on viola and clawhammer banjo, and Kent Blanton on bass.

The song, and the arrangement, have an old-timey feel a bit reminiscent of The Carter Family.

Answer Him is available for download purchase in iTunes, and radio hosts can get the track from Airplay Direct.

Look for Little Darlin’ on 7” vinyl later this Summer.

Vinyl EP coming from Jessica Stiles

Jessica Stiles has been working the acoustic and Americana scene in both DC and Nashville for some time, but her next project, a 4 song/7” vinyl EP is all bluegrass.

She’s set to call it Little Darlin’ (Pal of Mine), after the Carter Family classic which will lead off side one. That song is expected to also serve as a digital single in advance of the record’s Spring 2014 release.

Stiles tracked at Hilltop Studio in Nashville with Josh Williams on guitar, Mike Compton on mandolin, Charlie Cushman on banjo, Shadd Cobb on fiddle and Kent Blanton on bass. Jessica sings the lead vocals, and contributes one original song, a Gospel number titled Answer Him, which she said she styled after the Gospel songs of Hank Williams and Flatt & Scruggs.

For Jessica, everything seemed to fall right into place.

“Working with (recording engineer) Steve Chandler at Hilltop Recording Studio makes my job as producer super easy. Steve works with the top names in the business, from Merle Haggard to Larry Sparks, and is currently up for a Grammy award for his production and engineering work on James King’s country bluegrass album.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to make this recording with such gifted personnel and especially right now where I’m at in this point in my life. I sincerely look forward to finishing up production and getting to drop the needle on the platter!”

There are no audio samples available just yet, but the single will be up at Airplay Direct before too much longer.
