New members of Bull Harman & Bulls Eye

Bull Harman & Bull’s Eye have announced some new members.

The St. Louis-based band has brought Alex Rifle in to play banjo, Allan Sterling on reso-guitar, and Harman’s son Wyatt has taken over his mom, Tammy’s, bass role. Bull remains on guitar and vocals, as does Hal Cottrell on mandolin, and Tammy still hops up on stage to sing a few numbers in their live show.

The best news from the Harmans is that Bull has fully recovered from the back surgery that put him down in 2013. Tammy says he is feeling well, and back to doing things he shouldn’t, as usual.

They are both delighted with the new band sound, which Tammy says is a bit more hard-edged and driving, owing to the age curve bending downward with all the new members.

Bull and Tammy also host an instructional weekend for guitarists each year, St Louis Flatpick, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2014. Held March 21-23 this year, they will offer classes with Wyatt Rice and Clay Hess, along with mini workshops for mandolin, bass and banjo.

Tammy also tells us that they have partnered with Bourgois guitars for a special raffle.

“In honor of the 10th Anniversary, we are raffling off a brand new custom made Bourgois Aged Tone Series Guitar with Madagascar rosewood, valued at $7500. The headstock inlay is of the St. Louis Flatpick logo.

Winners need not be present to win.”

Raffle tickets can be purchased online, where full details about St Louis Flatpick can also be found.

You can keep up with Bull’s Eye on their web site, or on Facebook.

Bull Harman – an eventful year

We caught up recently with Bull and Tammy Harman, they of Bull Harman & Bull’s Eye and St. Louis Flatpick.

It turns out that Bull had surgery on November 11 to replace 2 discs in his neck. Tammy said that the doctors found more damage than they had anticipated, but that the surgery went well and Bull is getting better steadily in therapy. He hopes to return to work in January.

The band saw their first CD come out earlier this year. Aiming To Please features 14 tracks with Bull on guitar, Tammy on bass, Steve Cox on banjo, Hal Cottrell on mandolin, and JImmy Campbell on resonator guitar.

Tammy shared the details on St. Louis Flatpick 2011, their annual 2-day guitar camp held in… wait for it… St. Louis, MO. Instructors for the March 11-13 event will be Tim Stafford and Richard Bennett. You can find full tuition and registration details online.

Here’s hoping for a speedy return to the pink for Bull, one of our favorite speedy flatpickers!

The big heart of Bull Harman

Anyone who knows flatpicker and guitar workshop impresario Bull Harman knows him as among the most gregarious, warm-hearted people in our business. Always quick with a smile – and just as swift with a fiery lick – Bull is a naturally friendly “people person” who, along with his wife Tammy, has performed for many years with Bull Harman & Bulls Eye and hosts the annual St Louis Flatpick workshop weekend each spring.

We heard from Tammy earlier this week with the shocking news that Bull had suffered a heart attack this past weekend. Tammy rushed him to the hospital in the wee hours of Sunday morning to discover that he had major blockage in two arteries. Tammy said that Bull was in intense pain, but after stents were placed in the arteries and he got some rest, he was doing much better.

Bull is now back at home resting in bed, and he is expected to be fit as a gitfiddle shortly.

Any of his many friends who would like to share get well wishes can send them to:

IBMA Exhibit Hall Photos

Here’s a nice group of photos from the Exhibit Hall.

Wednesday night at IBMA

Last night I stayed up late to sample the offerings at the afterhours showcases here at IBMA. I had a great time, though I am dragging just a little this morning. The first act I caught last night was David Davis and the Warrior River Boys. They were playing the main stage before it closed down for the evening. Good traditional bluegrass.

After that I wondered the halls for a while talking to friends and listening to jams. I hung out with Bull Harman and his crowd for a while, spoke to my good friend Buddy Merriam for a few minutes, and heard an old friend from my school days, Andrew Collins, jamming in the halls. From there I headed over to the PineCastle showcase room to catch Greg Cahill and Special Consensus. I then slipped downstairs to hear Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper.

More to photos to come in a few minutes.
