Borrowed Tyme – Borrowed Tyme Band

It becomes very clear at the outset that the Borrowed Tyme Band have no interest in pushing the parameters. Their homespun harmonies and breezy homilies make it clear that they’re content to confine themselves to bluegrass’ traditional trappings, and recreating a sound of a distinctly vintage variety. As a result, they convey an honesty and integrity that meshes well with their gentle yet jubilant sound.

The most surprisingly thing about the Indiana ensemble’s eponymous debut album from Bonfire Recording is that it is in fact their initial offering. The arrangements are so assured and in sync as to offer the impression that this is a far more experienced outfit than it actually is.

Founded in 2015, the group currently consists of  Roger Brown (mandolin), Josh Woods (banjo), Dan Canerday (guitar) and Rick Wilson (bass), all of whom contribute equally to the arrangements and leave an indelible impression as a a result. So too, the songs, which are divided equally between their own original offerings and a handful of classic covers culled from Ralph and Carter Stanley, Lester Flatt and A.P. Carter, as well as a traditional tune, Wild Bill Jones, to supplement the set. To their credit, the group makes no distinction between the classic and contemporary, applying the sound with a clear consistency that remains in effect overall.

Mostly, the band opts for a spiritual sensibility, an approach that’s filtered through such songs as My Time Will Come Someday, No Mother Or Dad, I Wanna Go, and Friendship In Heaven. The combination of diehard devotion and a well tethered template allows them to maintain both their unaffected attitude and a clear conviction that serves even the more modest material well. The title track with its waltz-like refrains, exemplifies the band’s ability to affect a quiet caress and an unhurried attitude that can be shared in combination. So too, Gold Watch and Chain provides a fond farewell, a romantic repast that ends the album with a final soothing caress.

Granted, Borrowed Tyme is a mostly modest offering, but that approach also adds to its charm. One gets the distinct impression that time — or tyme — is clearly on their side.

Borrowed Tyme and Nick Chandler & Delivered to Behind The Mic

Dawn Mac and her new agency, Behind The Mic Entertainment have two new signees to announce. Both Nick Chandler & Delivered from western North Carolina and central Indiana’s Borrowed Tyme Band have just joined the roster.

Chandler has been touring with his band since 2005 and signed last year with Poor Mountain Records. Like the label, he and his band focus largely on bluegrass Gospel. Nick plays mandolin, with Bo Bullman on guitar, Matthew Norton on bass, and Evan Fowler on banjo.

Dawn says of Chandler and his band…

“Nick Chandler and Delivered is one of the best kept secrets in all of Bluegrass music. I am excited and honored to be working with these fine folks.”

Borrowed Tyme is a newer group, working together since 2015. They are led by Roger Brown on mandolin with Josh Wood on banjo, Dan Canerday on guitar, and Rick Wilson on bass. They are signed to Bonfire Recording, an associated company to Pinecastle Records.

Of them, Dawn says…

“Borrowed Tyme Band is on course to be one of the hottest new bands out there and are quickly proving they have what it takes to not only make their mark in this business but will be around for years to come. I am excited about the opportunity to represent them in this new capacity and look forward to working with them.”

Behind The Mic will represent both of these groups for live performances, along with Beracha Valey and Jeff Brown & Still Lonesome. You can find more information online.

Borrowed Tyme to Bonfire Recording – new single released

Bonfire Recording Company has announced the signing of Indiana bluegrass band Borrowed Tyme to the label. Located in Greenville, SC, Bonfire is owned by Pinecastle Records and is their home studio.

A debut album from the band is due from Bonfire in July. The self-titled project will feature a mix of bluegrass favorites and Borrowed Tyme originals. It is being produced by Tony Wary, guitarist with Pinecastle Records artists Blue Mafia, who has also signed a deal with Bonfire to produce a number of new records for them.

He says the partnership is a good one for him.

“I’ve been with Pinecastle Records for several years. When given the opportunity to do the same with Bonfire Recording Studio, I jumped at the offer! An awesome studio space, people that care about the artist, top notch equipment with great artists and engineers. Looking forward to working there for many years!”

He also speaks quite highly of Borrowed Tyme and their work on this first album.

“They have grown as a band and I couldn’t have been happier with their performance on this project. If you want good traditional grass with originals written by the band, this is the perfect CD for you.”

Borrowed Tyme is Roger Brown on mandolin, Josh Wood on banjo, Dan Canerday on guitar, and Rick Wilson on bass.

A first single is available now from the group’s bandcamp page. It’s their arrangement of Little Bessie, one of the most popular death ballads in bluegrass and old time music. It’s been famously recorded by a who’s who of artists, including The Country Gentlemen, The Stanley Brothers, The Blue Sky Boys, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Crowe, Roscoe Holcomb, and many others. There are few more lonesome in the repertoire, and Borrowed Tyme puts their mark on it with even more vocal part movement than did the Gentlemen in their landmark recording from 1961, plus some overhanded guitar.

Little Bessie is available to radio programmers now at AirPlay Direct.

Look for the Borrowed Tyme album July 6 from Bonfire Recording.
