I Wish You Knew from Bluegrass Express

For the latest single from their Jim & Jesse tribute project, Bluegrass Express has released one of the McReynolds brothers most popular songs, I Wish You Knew.

The initial Jim & Jesse track was included on their Bluegrass Special album in 1963, just six years after The Louvin Brothers had released the original. Featured on that album were Jesse McReynolds on mandolin and lead vocal, Jim McReynolds on guitar and tenor vocal, Allen Shelton on banjo, Jimmy Buchanan on fiddle, David Sutherland on bass, and Douglas Kirkham on drums.

Bluegrass Express turns in a faithful recreation of that version. Also a family band, they include founder Gary Underwood on guitar, with his son, Greg Underwood, on bass and lead vocal, while Gary’s son, Jacob Underwood, plays mandolin and sings tenor. The family vibe is completed with brothers Andrew Hunt on fiddle and Jonathan Hunt on banjo.

Jacob kicks off the song with a very clean solo in the Jesse McReynolds style, as the band offers a very entertaining cut of a song with enduring popularity in bluegrass music.

North Wind from Bluegrass Express

From northern Illinois comes Bluegrass Express, and another single from their upcoming album, A Tribute to Jim & Jesse.

The Express is a family band with a unique story. The group includes three generations of Underwoods – Gary Underwood on guitar; his son, Greg Underwood, on bass; and Greg’s son, Jacob Underwood, on mandolin – along with two brothers from Oklahoma, Andrew and Jonathan Hunt on fiddle and banjo, respectively.

Their sound is very much a throwback to an earlier time in bluegrass music, in particular on this next project, the music of Jim and Jesse McReynolds, a hugely successful Virginia brother duet team from the 1950s through the ’70s.

For this second single, the guys have chosen North Wind, a song written by Charlie Louvin which he recorded with Jim & Jesse back in 1982. Greg and Jacob trade verses on their cut, which hews closely to the way the McReynolds performed it in the ’80s.

Jim & Jesse Tribute from Bluegrass Express

Plum River Records has released a first single from their upcoming album with Bluegrass Express, which is entitled A Tribute To Jim & Jesse.

The Express have been a staple on the midwestern bluegrass scene since their founding in northern Illinois back in 1980. Starting out with a father and son team of Gary and Greg Underwood on guitar and bass, respectively, it now includes Greg’s son, Jacob, on mandolin. The current outfit also features Oklahoma bluegrass brothers Andrew and Jonathan Hunt on fiddle and banjo, who had previously worked with the Byron Berline Band.

The Underwoods have had a long connection with Jim & Jesse, who helped them land their first record deal with Atteiram Records in 1985. With Jacob playing brilliant cross-picked mandolin in the Jesse McReynolds style, it seemed like a good time to remember their friends and mentors with a tribute project.

Don’t Say Goodbye If You Love Me is the inaugural track to be released, which the McReynolds put on their Bluegrass Special record in 1963. Bluegrass Express does a terrific job emulating the Jim & Jesse sound, much thanks to Jacob Underwood who sings Jim’s tenor part and plays Jesse’s mandolin style as well as you might hope.

The song was written by Jimmie Davis who initially recorded it in 1936, with a much slower country sound. Jim & Jesse, and now Bluegrass Express, sped it up for the bluegrass, and it works a treat.

Perfect Part of Me – new single from Bluegrass Express

Bluegrass Express is a deeply established bluegrass band from northern Illinois with a history that goes back more than four decades. Founded by guitarist Gary Underwood, the group has seen a great many players over those years, but i nrecent days has taken on more of a family band vibe. Gary’s son Greg is on bass with his grandson Jacob on banjo and mandolin, plus a pair of brothers from Oklahoma, Andrew Hunt on mandolin and fiddle, and Jonathan Hunt on guitar and banjo. All five share in the vocals.

Over their long tenure, strong original material has been their calling card, and a new single from Plum River Records shows that this trend continues on into the present day. Perfect Part of Me was written and sung by Greg Underwood, a mid-tempo ballad about a man’s undying love for his partner.

For this track, Jacob is on banjo, Gary is on rhythm guitar, Greg on bass, Andrew on mandolin and fiddle, and Jonathan on lead guitar.

Answer To My Prayer – Bluegrass Express

In the thirty-plus years since its founding, Bluegrass Express has developed a steady following throughout the Midwest, winning over audiences with its strong mixture of straightforward bluegrass and Gospel, all with a traditional bent. The band has recently released its eighth album, an all-Gospel effort titled Answer to My Prayer. All ten tracks are enjoyable, with both the easily recognizable classic hymns and the lesser-known Gospel cuts showing off clear vocals and tight instrumentation.

Bluegrass Express is, in general, a family affair, with three generations of the Underwood family making up three-fourths of the band: Gary (guitar), son Greg (bass), and grandson Jacob (banjo and guitar). Nate Burie rounds out the group on mandolin. Greg handles the majority of the lead vocals here, presenting a smooth, genial voice throughout the album. One of his best performances is opening track He Lives, an uptempo version of the testimonial hymn. Greg gives the song an earnest, cheerful reading, accompanied by bouncy banjo from Jacob and peppy fiddle from guest Tim Crouch. Victory in Jesus is another fine rendition of an old hymn, again largely guided by Jacob’s banjo and with nice mandolin work from Nate. Greg’s vocals on the verses are sincere and heartfelt, while Gary takes over for a stirring chorus.

Greg also penned the album’s lone original song, which is the title track. It’s a catchy number with a breezy melody, country-style fiddle from Crouch, and a nice use of stops, with lyrics that thank the Lord for always answering prayers. The band’s cut of Little White Church is one of the album’s highlights, particularly thanks to the harmony on the choruses and tasteful mandolin. Many traditionalists aren’t fans of electric bass, but I am, and Greg’s playing here deserves a special kudos. Gary sings lead on this number, as well as the inspirational Higher Ground, which finds the singer striving to be more Christ-like in his daily living. Gary and Greg also offer a fine duet on the Louvin Brothers’ You’ll Be Rewarded; they may be a father and son, but they tackle the brother duo style with ease.

John Bowman joins in on fiddle and tenor vocal for Just Any Day Now, which has more of a southern Gospel feel than most of the rest of the album. Bluegrass fans may recognize the song from Doyle Lawson’s repertoire, though numerous Gospel groups have also recorded it. Speaking of Doyle Lawson, What Will You Do With This Man has an eighties Quicksilver vibe to it, with gentle mandolin, striking harmonies, and nice electric bass. The song is a well-written telling of the story of Jesus’s trial before Pilate and subsequent crucifixion, and may be the album’s best track. Justin Moses guests on dobro, and his intro is especially strong.

Bluegrass Express has everything it takes to be a strong bluegrass band: stout rhythm, talented vocalists, skilled instrumental solos, and good taste in selecting songs. Answer to My Prayer is a solid bluegrass Gospel album, and fans of traditional Gospel should find much to enjoy here.

Video tease for Answer To My Prayer from Bluegrass Express

A few months ago we shared news about a debut single from Bluegrass Express, the title track from their recent release, Answer To My Prayers.

Now that the album is out, the band has prepared a video overview with a taste of the crisp picking and soulful three and four-part harmony that has been the hallmark of the group this past 36 years. Formed in 1980 by Gary Underwood and his son Greg, the band now also features Greg’s son, Jacob, on banjo. That’s some real family harmony right there!

In addition to Gary on guitar and Greg on bass, Bluegrass Express includes Nate Burie on mandolin, with Jacob on the five.

For Answer To My Prayer, they also had assistance for John Bowan and Tim Crouch on fiddle, and Justin Moses on reso-guitar.

The new album, an all-Gospel effort, is available as either a CD or download from the band’s web site.

In Our Own Words – Bluegrass Express

Illinios’ Bluegrass Express has released In Our Own Words on Plum River Records, their 8th album since being founded in 1980. The title refers to the fact that all 12 tracks were written within the band.

They have a multigenerational angle in the group as well. On guitar and vocals is Gary Underwood, with his son Greg on bass, and Greg’s son Jacob on banjo. Filling out the group is Andy Hatfield on mandolin.

Both Jacob and Andy are multi-instrumentalists, with papers. Hatfield took first place in the 2013 National Mandolin Championship at the Walnut Valley, after coming in both 2nd and 3rd previously. He won the Guitar Championship in 2011. Jacob has won championships on mandolin, fiddle and guitar in a variety of competitions.

Bluegrass Express put together this video to introduce several of the songs from the new album, and the members of the band.

Guests on In Our Own Words include Tim Crouch on fiddle, Sierra Hull on mandolin, and Bethany Burie on vocal.
