Donna Ulisse tapes “Track by Track” for Sirius XM

DonnaU and Kyle C at micsI had the opportunity to be the “fly on the wall” as I sat in the beautiful Sirius XM studios in downtown Nashville yesterday and listened to Donna Ulisse visit with host Kyle Cantrell as they played and discussed all thirteen tracks on her new release, “Walk This Mountain Down”.

Much  of the conversation was about how and why Donna wrote the songs since she is a writer or co-writer on all thirteen tracks as well as the process of recording with producer Keith Sewell. I also found it interesting to hear that when Ulisse was an artist on Atlantic Records that she was on Ralph Emery’s Nashville Now TV show with Bill Monroe. Donna thought it was his last time he was able to be on the show and she shared some of the conversation and words of wisdom he shared with her during a commercial break that evening.

“Track by Track” gives listeners a wonderful opportunity to get in-depth information on their favorite artists and takes them deep into the new recordings an artist.  Even though I am with Donna’s label and have heard “Walk This Mountain Down” many, many times, I found myself hearing things I had not heard her share before due to Cantrell’s skill as an interviewer combined with the time allowed for this type of show and I was enjoying the taping as a fan rather than record label insider.

The show airs for the first time on May 13, 2009 and then several more times that week. Check Donna’s website and myspace for exact dates and times as we receive them.

Lisa Ray & Old Town are back!

Hello, my name is Lisa Ray. Most people remember me from playing fiddle and singing with Cedar Hill, but, I am no longer in that band. I left Cedar Hill in February. I have my own band. Its Lisa Ray & Old Town. Some folks will remember the name of that band too, as I had the band Lisa Ray & Old Town in the 90s for a few years before I joined Cedar Hill. I was fortunate enough to be able to add my old bandmates once again, thankfully. Our current website is: http://www.myspace.com/lisarayoldtown

Hope to see everyone again and looking forward to this new chapter in our lives.

The Duhks in New York City! April 13 @ The Highline Ballroom

The Duhks are coming to New York City!

Hailed by the New York Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement, The Duhks (pronounced like “ducks”) are a 5-member Canadian folk-rock-Celtic-old time-bluegrass group consisting of Leonard Podolak, Sarah Dugas, Tania Elizabeth, Jordan McConnell and Christian Dugas.  Four of them hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba and the fifth member is from Victoria, British Columbia. Their music draws heavily on all of the North American musical traditions, while successfully integrating Latin-music-influenced percussion. Their first album, Your Daughters & Your Sons was nominated for a Juno award, their eponymous second album won a Juno for Best Roots & Traditional Album by a Group, and “Heaven’s My Home,” from their third album, was nominated for the 2007 Grammy award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The Duhks are currently touring in support of their new album, “Fast Paced World” (Sugar Hill/EMI), which was just nominated for a 2009 JUNO Award for Roots & Traditional Album of The Year: Group.

Richard Gilewitz coming to Oakland

Richard Gilewitz, known to fascinate his audiences with fingerstyle gymnastics on his 6 and 12-string guitars, is going to be joining us on Saturday May 9th at Leo’s Professional Audio, in Oakland. His ability to make one guitar sound like an entire orchestra stems from 33 years of well-honed technique and 25 years on the road touring worldwide, creating his own signature sound that has been captured on his CDs, DVDs, and songbooks. But it is his live shows that bring out the best in this author, composer, guitarist, humorist, and storyteller who follows a distinct cadence that creates a glow that continually grows a little brighter with each tune. It was magical when he joined us last year – don’t miss it this time! Space is limited, so please call or email for reservations!

Leo’s hosts free seminars and clinics every few months, from mastering audio to successful interning, from learning the ins-and-outs of Pro Tools to fingerpicking guitar techniques. Claire Lynch Comes Home to the Hudson Valley and Bodles on May 15th

Born up the road in Kingston and on to Alabama at 12, Claire returns home for a stop on the never ending road of success!

By any measure, the Claire Lynch Band is high on the bluegrass world’s A-List, with musicians whose accolades include International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Female Vocalist of the Year and two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album (Claire); two IBMA Guitar Player of the Year awards (Jim Hurst); and two IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards (Mark Schatz).

Claire’s musical direction dates back to the days of the Front Porch String Band, resulting in a seasoned sound that is simultaneously unpretentious and richly textured. It’s a down-home, front porch sensibility – until you realize that it’s a rare front porch, indeed, that has ever hosted musicians of this caliber. Jim Hurst throws out impossible leads effortlessly, and the band is grounded by bassist Mark Schatz’s deft touch and masterful instinct for groove. Toronto native Jason Thomas brings monster chops on fiddle and mandolin, supported by remarkable musical versatility and imagination that have made him instantly at home in one of the greatest bluegrass bands currently on the scene.

Dolly Parton credits Claire with “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” Claire’s harmonies have graced the recordings of many stellar musicians, from Ralph Stanley to Linda Ronstadt. Equally gifted as a songwriter, her songs have been recorded by The Seldom Scene, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, Cherryholmes, The Whites and others.

Opening the show: Breakneck Annie – Performing Americana, Folk/Traditional music. Good Time Music – not quite bluegrass, not quite old time, not quite folk. Rarely serious and always fun.
