Looking for Mandolin Player Tim Duran

Banjo player Jerry Oland wrote:

Tim’s Mexican-American, originally from Oxnard. I met him at Bean Blossom in 1972. He then moved to Poughkeepsie, NY to play mandolin with me in the Arm Bros. In the mid-70’s Tim played mandolin with Larry Sparks, recording a Christmas album with him. No one I know has seen or heard from him since early 2000, but he may still be living in the Pear Blossom area. He was a great mandolin player.

I’m with Jerry, hoping to locate Tim. Any help would be appreciated.

Please see the Arm Bros. audio and photo project I did with Jerry’s, fiddle player Evan Stover’s and bass player Bob Pool’s, help last year.

Also take a look two more photos of them.

Donna Ulisse to play RedLight Cafe in Atlanta on April 16

Donna Ulisse and her band The Poor Mountain Boys will take to the stage at the RedLight Cafe in Atlanta, Georgia this Thursday night, April 16 at 9:00 p.m. for a two hour performance of songs from her current release “Walk This Mountain Down” as well as favorites from her 2007 release “When I Look Back”.  Ulisse always shares stories of how and why many of the songs she has recorded were written and is in the position to do so since she is a writer or co-writer on all twenty seven songs on these two CD releases.

The Poor Mountain Boys are made up of Rick Stanley on acoustic guitar and harmony vocals, Scott Neubert on dobro, acoustic guitar and harmonies, Greg Davis on banjo, Mike Sumner on mandolin and Bobby King on upright bass. Ulisse named the band after a song called “Poor Mountain Boy” on her new release that she wrote with her husband and frequent co-writer Rick Stanley who often steps up to the mic at shows and sings a few tunes. Folks in the audience are often surprised to hear him introduced as the writer of the bluegrass favorite “Home In The Mountains”.  He is also a cousin to Dr. Ralph Stanley.

Here’s hoping all the folks in the Atlanta area will make it out to the show. If you have yet to hear Ulisse perform live, you’re in for a real treat!

Overdrive Appearing At The Historic Lays Hardware Downtown Coeburn VA

THE OVERDRIVE BLUEGRASS BAND. From Left to Right: Meredith Goins, Jared Hensley, Tom Cecil, Dwayne Anderson, and Tyler Williams in front

A hot new bluegrass group who uses speed, drive, and taste to captivate each audience for which they perform this group is made up of a group of young folks from different parts of the country who knows about bringing a new meaning to the word bluegrass. The members met in college at East Tennessee State University at local jam sessions held on campus. After realizing the potential for the creation of a band, they put there heads (and their instruments) together, and with that formed OVERDRIVE. The band is made up of Tyler Williams on lead vocals and guitar; Jared Hensley on Lead Guitar, Mandolin, and vocals; Meredith Goins on fiddle and vocals; Tom Cecil on banjo, guitar, and vocals; Dwayne Anderson on bass and vocals. When seeing and hearing Tyler Williams sing and perform on stage, tears will come to your eyes and the hair on your neck will raise. The power and strength of this young mans voice is one you will never forget as you see Tyler became blind as an infant and also suffers from mild cerebral palsy, but seeing him on stage you will definitely see nothing is holding him back for what he loves to do most. Along with the rest of the members of this band you are in for a show of a lifetime and one you don’t want to miss.

Bluegrass in the Pavilion Concert

The Flagler Museum welcomes two renowned Bluegrass groups, Dailey & Vincent and Grasstowne, to headline the fourth annual Bluegrass in The Pavilion concert on April 18, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and all proceeds benefit the Southern Arts Federation’s emergency planning for cultural institutions.

The Flagler Museum continues to bring the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida. Dailey & Vincent make their debut on the Pavilion stage after winning an unprecedented seven trophies at the 2008 International Bluegrass Music Awards Show, including Entertainer, Vocal Group, Emerging Artist and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year (for “By the Mark”). Their self-titled debut CD on Rounder Records went straight to the top of the Billboard bluegrass charts, where it remained for 35 weeks. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent have devoted their lives to bluegrass, to both the traditions and the possibilities that it offers, and now fans in South Florida will hear one of the most sensational Bluegrass band around.

The renowned Grasstowne will play at this year’s event with renditions of great American classics, and new favorites. Grasstowne was nominated for an unprecedented 10 awards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) including Bluegrass Band of the Year. Group member Steve Gulley was already honored with the 2008 Song of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) for “Through The Window Of A Train.” The band is comprised of Phil Leadbetter, Steve Gulley, and Alan Bibey. Add to the mix two young and talented players; Jason Davis on banjo and Travis Greer on upright bass, and you have one of the hottest bluegrass band on tour today.

Wisconsin Area Music Industry Nominates Mud River Lee & The Bluegrass Orchestra

In response to the WAMI phone call about being nominated for Wisconsin’s Best Bluegrass Band, Mud River Lee says ‘ Wow!’ The Wisconsin Area Music Industry nominated Mud River Lee for a Folk award back in the 80’s but this time around, the band has evolved to the current ‘Mud River Lee & The Bluegrass Orchestra’ recently, after being ‘The Bluegrass Three’ for a number of years.

Lee Modder, better known as Mud River Lee, credits WAMI as being the reason his music and band evolved. ‘I went to a fancy WAMI CD Roulette competition held on the 28th floor of a Penthouse, overlooking Lake Michigan, unbeknownst to me then, arranged by our Vocalist/Percussionist Barbara, for WAMI, back when she had some pull in real estate, in Milwaukee, before the crash, and that is where we met.’

He goes on, ‘I was not necessarily looking for more bandmates, but was intrigued to be there, as always, by the excitement at the WAMI CD Roulette’s, where they have Music Leaders critiqueing the local band’s new CD’s…and one always hears a nice variety, and you get to know what your fellow musicians are up to. So that is when I ran into Barbara, who had been professionally trained as a vocalist in San Fran area, by Annabelle Cruz of Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks and Pure Honey’s Alicia and Danny Daniels, and had not found any real new music friends, since her return to Wisconsin, to work out tunes with, besides Vic Thomas, another percussionist, of course. I found out that when you get Barbara to jam with, she is loyal, and looks to make music with only sincere non-egotistical people, so she brings with her music pals too. So that was a plus, and who doesn’t know and like Vic?’

Mud River Lee said he had been booked by Vic Thomas in the past, but the bookings had changed in the style of music he books at Summerfest, so Mud River Lee had lost touch with that music connection, although always fond of one another, on a personal level. When Lee met Barbara that day, he felt that she would be a nice addition, based on her bright energy and busineses focus, no matter how she sounded, but lucky for him, he was right on the money, with her music ability and knowledge, he quipped.

When asked if nominated because of his connection with booking ‘mainstay’ Vic, he says, ‘Well, I don’t think so, since Vic is a seasonal player with the Band, but of course, on a musical level, maybe, because Vic really adds alot as a musician. He downplays his ability, but when you take Bluegrass, and the bass-guitar- banjo rythym, and add another beat, it almost loses it’s Bluegrass purists following, but picks up a folllowing that is more centrical and well rounded, drawing from a larger pool of listeners attracted to the music, because now we can sound ‘Island’ and even get ‘Electronica’ with Vic’s talents. I can see that now, our amounts of bookings have increased, since I added Barbara and then Vic, but of course, it never hurts to add attractive ladies either, we also have added Sherry Dobson as well, although at first I lost a decent banjo and mando guy, and viola player too, when I added Barbara, but then I picked up additional players then too. So it was a trade off, and I was surprised when they left, but it was for the better I guess, and we are all still friends and associates.’

Whether it is the music or the people that have created The Mud River Lee and The Bluegrass Orchestra’s sensation, Mud River Lee & The Bluegrass Orchestra hope that Wisconsinites go to Wamimusic.com and click on the word VOTE, and write in Mud River Lee Band, because they are up against some pretty stern competition, and want to win The People’s choice award, even if they do not win ‘ The Best Bluegrass Band’ award.

On the competitive nature of things, in the business, in a town filled with Music lovers, one can appreciate the hybrid of music and musicians coming to gether to create a unique sound, which Mud River Lee’s violin player, John Losiniecki uniquely calls ‘Blurrrgrass’ on a take off about Wisconsin’s weather. Good luck Mud River Lee and the whole bunch found in Mud River Lee’s The Bluegrass Orchestra.

The MRLBGO line-up is:

‘Musky’ Mike Greylak- Banjo
