New album coming from Rob & Trey

Compass Records has announced a July 8 release date for The Country Blues, the sophomore project from Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley.

Their unique sound is based on Rob’s stunning mastery of the reso-guitar and Trey’s soulful country/bluegrass singing and flatpicking guitar. Their act started as a side project when Rob was still a member of Blue highway, and Trey was working as a country artist, but the attention they received and the music they made convinced them to throw in together full time.

It’s rare for a new pairing like theirs to get such notice right out of the gate, but their debut album, Before The Sun Goes Down, drew a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album of 2016.

The Country Blues will also feature guest performances by Mike Bub on bass and John Alvey on drums, with additional guest spots from Ron Block, Vince Gill, Aubrey Haynie, Carl Jackson, Shawn Lane, Andy Leftwich, Robinella and John Randall Stewart.

Not too shabby.

Track listing follows:

  1. Ballad Of A Well Known Gun
  2. Everywhere I Go is a Long Way from Home
  3. That’s What Leaving’s For
  4. Pray Enough
  5. Leave My Woman Alone
  6. I Won’t GIve Up My Train
  7. Biscuits and Gravy
  8. Friend Of The Devil
  9. May You Never Be Alone
  10. Willie Jones
  11. One Way Out

You can hear the added confidence from working together this past year or so all over the world in their polished, grass-inflected, alt-country sound. I’m sure Compass will be pushing this to Americana and country broadcasters in short order.

A Power Of Bluegrass story from Sweden

Andy Cargill is an acoustic musician and singer/songwriter living in Stockholm who has been shooting and publishing a video log (vlog) of his musical journey this year as he prepares to create a band and begin performing the music from his latest record at folk festivals in Sweden and beyond.

He’s not a specifically bluegrass artist, but his adventure happened to intersect with a concert in Grenna by Rob Ickes & Trey Hensely, supported by Swedish grassers Dunderhead. We think readers worldwide will enjoy Andy’s first real experience with the bluegrass world we take for granted, and the welcoming vibe of the jamming scene.

It’s good to know that it’s the same the world over.

And here is video of Rob and Trey’s encore at the Grenna show, with members of Dunderhead invited up to join them.

Rob & Trey headed for the old country

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley are taking their acoustic bluegrass/country show to Europe for a ten day run of shows next month. The powerhouse guitar and reso-guitar duo, set off by Trey’s soulful singing, will be making their first visit together to the UK and northern Europe.

Ickes said that they are both excited for the opportunity.

“We start in England, and then head off to Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I’ve never been to Norway and Sweden before, so I’m looking forward to that. My Grandpa was Norwegian, so I guess I’ll be getting back to my roots!”

The tour gets started on April 2 with a pair of dates in Frodsham in northwestern England, followed by three days in Denmark (Esbjerg, Korsør, Copenhagen) and shows in Sweden (Granna) and Norway (Bergen, Moss).

Full details on all the European tour stops can be found online. Rob and Trey have a mighty busy schedule to tackle when they return home in mid-April.

Rob and Trey in Sarasota

Last week when Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley were making a run through Florida, with sold out shows in Sarasota and Suffer, they stopped by the Sarasota Herald Tribune to record an episode of their Ticket TV web program.

Rob and Trey performed a 15 minute set for the assembled newsroom staff, including a song from their upcoming second CD, in their country/bluegrass hybrid duet style.

Thanks to Vicki Dean with the Herald Tribune for sharing the video with our readers.

Vicki also asked us to remind any bluegrass performers likely to pass through Sarasota to contact her if they would like to do a short set for them, which the paper promotes heavily in the area online.

Friday video at World of Bluegrass 2015

Here’s a group of videos captured at various venues here at Wide Open Bluegrass 2015 on Friday.

Bud’s Collective in the Marriott Hotel

In Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project, he researched the tunes and songs from Alan Lomax’s catalogs and brought them back to life with their own fresh new takes on them.

Adam Hart was one of the clawhammer banjo players who played on the Masters Workshop Stage. He also played an African banjo.

Rob Ikes and Trey Hensley also played the Masters Workshop Stage on Friday.

The Steel Wheels packed the place for their showcase, and tore it up with some great music.

Here is a fun jam of some of the kids here at IBMA.

Trey Hensley & Rob Ickes video from The Down Home

Trey Hensley & Rob Ickes have posted this video from their performance last Friday at The Down Home in Johnson City, TN.

It finds them laying down a scorching version of Jimmy Martin’s Freeborn Man, which has served as a flatpicking showcase for many a fine guitarist over the year. Here Trey serves up a heaping helping of guitar hero, mixing bluegrass, country, and rock guitar stylings along the way.

Needless to say, Rob gets his licks in as well.

Rob and Trey have some more live show dates this summer and fall, including a trip to Germany in October. Here is the remaining schedule.

  • 8/19 – Station Inn, Nashville, TN
  • 8/21 – The Evening Muse, Charlotte, NC
  • 8/22 – Mack and Mack Design Studios, Greensboro, NC
  • 9/16 – Compass Records Americana Music Fest Showcase
  • 9/24 – Station Inn, Nashville, TN

My Way Is the Highway video from Rob & Trey

To celebrate the release of their new Compass Records album, Before The Sun Goes Down, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley have created a live performance video for CMT Edge. It finds the somewhat unlikely duo running through one of Trey’s songs, My Way Is The Highway, after a short introductory interview segment.

Click here to see another live music video of Rob and Trey, and here to see our interview with them during last year’s World of Bluegrass.

Rob and Trey play the blues

To help promote their new album, Before The Sun Goes Down, Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley have released a music video for one of the tracks, Pride and Joy.

The song is a cover of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan’s signature number, and a bold move for any guitarist or vocalist to tackle.

But these boys are up to the task as you can see in this live, in-studio performance.

Music City Roots has also made video available from Rob and Trey’s appearance on the show November 5. It’s their version of the Grateful Dead classic, Friend of The Devil, one which is not included on the upcoming CD.

The album isn’t due to hit until January 13, but Rob has arranged for some pre-orders to be delivered in time for Christmas. Visit his web site for details.

Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley in January ’15

Compass Records has announced January 13, 2015 as the release date for Before The Sun Goes Down, the upcoming CD from Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley.

It’s a fun album, that mixes hard driving bluegrass with classic country based around Trey’s strong voice and flatpicking skills, and Rob’s unquestioned mastery of the resonator slide guitar. This is a full band project, with top Nashville pickers and singers filling the bill.

The track listing includes:

  1. Before the Sun Goes Down
  2. Lightning
  3. I’d Rather Be Gone
  4. Georgia on a Fast Train
  5. My Way is the Highway
  6. Workin’ Man Can’t Get Nowhere Today
  7. When My Last Song is Sung
  8. Pride and Joy
  9. More Than Roses
  10. Raisin’ the Dickens
  11. Misery
  12. Little Cabin on the Hill
  13. There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang

Prior to the album release, Rob and Trey have scheduled a brief west coast duo tour in the first half of December.

  • 12/4/14 – Royal Room – Seattle, WA
  • 12/5/14 – Green Frog – Bellingham, WA
  • 12/6/14 – Treehouse – Leavenworth, CA
  • 12/7/14 – Little River Inn – Little River, CA
  • 12/9/14 – Tallman Hotel – Upper Lake, CA
  • 12/11/14 – Don Quixote’s – Felton, CA
  • 12/12/14 – Boulevard Music – Culver City, CA
  • 12/13/14 – Powerhouse – Del Mar, CA

Trey has recorded previously on his own, and generated a good bit of notice for his participation on the current Blue Highway album, The Game, on which he sings My Last Day In The Mine. His Merle Haggard-inflected country voice is the perfect complement to this coal mining number, and he’s sure to win a whole big bunch of new fans when Before The Sun Goes Down hits in the new year.

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley at WOB 2014

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley joined us during the World of Bluegrass convention to talk about their upcoming album together, Before The Sun Goes Down, which offers a mix of traditional bluegrass and country music. The pair have a show tomorrow (10/23) at Nashville’s Station Inn, joined by Aubrey Haynie and Mike Bub.
