Richard F Thompson is a long-standing free-lance writer about bluegrass music matters.
He first developed an interest in bluegrass music during the very early 1970s, with an early highlight being his attendance at an Early Bird Bluegrass Show, at the Ryman Auditorium, October 1972. His large collection of recordings dates from about this time.
Beginning in 1984 he has about 25 years of experience of writing for bluegrass and related music publications.
A list of those publications includes Country Music World; British Bluegrass News, for which he has been Editor and News Editor; International Country Music News, a monthly newspaper, with a regular column [Roots & Branches], several feature stories and reviews; Bluegrass Unlimited; The Bluegrass Blog, since July 2006; MoonShiner, the Japanese bluegrass music journal; and Bluegrass Europe.
His writing was used in programmes for the Edale Bluegrass Festival during the 1980 and 1990s.
After joining the International Bluegrass Music Association shortly after its formation, he was a panellist on the International Bluegrass Seminar at the IBMA’s World of Bluegrass, Owensboro, Kentucky, September 1988.
He is a founder member of the British Bluegrass Music Association, for which he wrote the membership brochure.
