HoustonFest is a bluegrass and old-time music festival held annually the 2nd weekend in June as a fundraiser for the Galax Volunteer Fire Department under their 401-C 3 corporation. The funds raised are used to purchase equipment, provide training for the volunteer firefighters and to fund Houston Caldwell Music Scholarships to young, upcoming musicians in the bluegrass and old time traditional music of this region. The festival is in honor of a young banjoist who was an accomplished musician, a firefighter, a soldier and believed in community service who lost his life in a tragic accident at age 18. This year will be the 8th year of the festival, with over 30 bands headlined by The Del McCoury Band, The Travelin’ McCoury’s, Blue Highway, Flatt Lonesome and many others.
