Steve and the Rangers July 4 video

PBS has posted online video of the July 4 performance by Steve Martin and Steep Canyon Rangers at the Capitol Fourth celebration in Washington, DC. They were given a lengthy spot on the program, and played three numbers before the large crowd in attendance, not to mention a huge national television audience tuned in watching live.

It shows just how generously Steve features the Rangers on their dual live shows – and gives fiddler Nicky Sanders a great chance to show off on Orange Blossom Special. Also notable is Martin’s new song, Me And Paul Revere, which retells the historical record of that famous ride from the perspective of Revere’s trusty steed.

If you missed it on TV Monday – or just want to enjoy it again – check it out below.

Anyone else get the impression that Jimmy Smits might have never before uttered the word “bluegrass?”

I have long been of the belief that if/when presented to the general public in a professional manner, bluegrass music will, by it’s own innate wonderfulness, win them over in short order. Watching this diverse crowd react to Steve and the Rangers seems to prove that point in spades.
