One Evening In May from Laurie Lewis

evening_in_mayCalifornia fiddler and songstress Laurie Lewis has released a new CD, a live set recorded with long time collaborators Tom Rozum and Nina Gerber.

One Evening In May features 15 tracks captured at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, CA during May of 2013. Laurie is out front on fiddle, guitar and vocals, with Rozum on mandolin and mandola, harmony vocals and guitar, and Nina Gerber on electric guitar. Additional vocal harmony is provided by guest performers The T Sisters. Tristan Clarridge also plays cello.

Many of the songs included here were written during a retreat that Lewis took for this purpose during the Winter prior to this concert, and were premiered for the recording. But the album opens with a sparse and somewhat sedate rendition of Ring Of Fire, the Merle Kilgore/June Carter song that was a hit for Johnny Cash in 1963.

The tone of the project is more folk than bluegrass, though it will surely be welcomed by her fans and those whose musical tastes include a wide array of acoustic music.

One Evening In May is available from Laurie’s web store or CD Baby.
