We heard the other day from Arhoolie Records, with word of a new band in California. Loafer’s Glory features noted west coast pickers Herb Pedersen on guitar, Bill Bryson on bass, Tom Sauber on fiddle, and Patrick Sauber on banjo.
A self-titled album is set for release May 22 on Arhoolie, who are marking their 51st year in 2012. Tom Diamant tells us that though the label may be better known for blues, Cajun, gospel, jazz, zydeco, and Tex-Mex records, they have a number of fine old-time and bluegrass items in their catalog. The Vern Williams Band, Vern & Ray, Rose Maddox, No Speed Limit, Snuffy Jenkins, Del McCoury, Jim Smoak and the Louisiana Honeydrippers, Stevie Barr, and many others have projects with Arhoolie.
Tom also said that they are delighted to be working with Loafer’s Glory, who have already booked a number of shows for this summer’s west coast festival circuit.
No word yet on the songs to be included on the debut album, but from this pair of YouTube clips, it seems that the band’s focus is on the tried and true.
