Guinness mandolin record attempt at Galax 2012

Galax Guinness attempt

Attention Galax mandolin contestants!

An attempt has been scheduled for August 7 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mandolin ensemble during the 2012 Old Fiddler’s Convention in Galax, VA. They will be seeking to break the previous record of  383 mandolinists set during the Festival at the Mainhoelle in Bürgstadt, Germany in 2005.

Organizers say that no particular proficieny is required – if you can hang in there on the basic melody or strum along on some standard fiddle tunes (Old Joe Clark, Cripple Creek, Angeline The Baker), you are welcome to take part.

The Galax Moose Lodge, who hosts the annual competition, is on board, and is offering the use of the main stage and backstage area for staging and organizing on August 7. Eastman has also offered one of their mandolins as a prize for one of the participants if the record is broken.

More details are posted on Facebook.

Tuesday at Galax is the mandolin competition, so hopefully everyone will join in. The organizers are looking for 500 eight-stringers to participate.

Remember, mandolin players to the back of the tent at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Galax!
