I had the honor of writing one with Brink Brinkman the other week in Nashville. He’s such a talented and prolific songwriter that I was a little intimidated when he asked. But he threw out an idea, and after a couple of minutes of false starts, we were off and running. Start to finish, we had a song — a good song, I might add — in about 90 minutes.
Speaking of co-writing, I’ll be doing my first writing session via Skype in the next week or two. i’ll report back.

Skype co-writing… very interesting. Have you heard of many people collaborating that way?

I’ve done some co-writing via Skype; it is, if not exactly common, growing in popularity.

My writing partner and I work together via Skype. He is an American guitarist and songwriter currently based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
For us, Skype is not a challenge — but the timezone difference sometimes is. We have found that creativity during morning hours is quite different from creativity in the evening — and to have them come together at the same point makes for a unique approach to songwriting.

Co-writing has been great for me, because it forces me to make an appointment and actually sit down and write (which I can’t seem to do on my own). I really enjoy bouncing ideas off other folks and hearing a different perspective. It has probably been ten years since I wrote a song on my own (I should really try to do that again sometime, maybe I’ll make an appointment with myself).
I’m eager to hear how skype/facetime writing appointments are going for folks. I teach a bit in that format, but haven’t had much experience with writing that way. Not sure I could be “creative” in the computer screen… maybe, I’m wrong!
My biggest problem is what to do with the song once it’s written. I’m a studio owner, so I never get around to making my own demos (cobblers shoes and all). How have y’all your songwriting??
Nice forum topic!

Like Stephen, I find it helpful to make an appointment. I do my best work early in the morning, but I’ve gotten used to writing at all hours. I guess I can thank journalism for that, since I couldn’t pick the time I wanted to write for all those years that I traveled and toiled!
Eventually, the computer screen “disappears” and doesn’t seem so odd. At least it’s that way for me. And it opens up a lot of possible connections with folks I wouldn’t be able to write with otherwise.
Demos are tricky. I’ve done a few at home, I’ve done some with co-writers in their studios and I’ve paid to have some done. The only ones that get done quickly are the ones I pay for! Too easy for me to put them off until “later,” and too easy for the co-writers to put them off to take care of paying customers!
