From a pragmatic view, it’s pretty rare for the mechanical royalty payments from a cut to exceed the amount spent on making an awesome, full-band, record-sounding demo.  It’s happened to me just a couple of times, […]

    Thanks for the Kudos, Dennis!

I know that when I’m producing, I’d rather have a clean Guitar/Vocal with chords/melody/lyrics I can hear . When I decide I like a song, however, it still has to pass artist […]

Like Stephen, I find it helpful to make an appointment. I do my best work early in the morning, but I’ve gotten used to writing at all hours. I guess I can thank journalism for that, since I couldn’t pick the time […]

Co-writing has been great for me, because it forces me to make an appointment and actually sit down and write (which I can’t seem to do on my own). I really enjoy bouncing ideas off other folks and hearing a […]

I did a series of video interviews with songwriters when I was in Nashville for IBMA. Those with Junior Sisk, Claire Lynch and Joe Newberry are posted and eight or nine others will be posted soon on the main page at Bluegrass Today. We’ll do some more at selected festivals and events in the coming months.

A quick shout out to Jon Weisberger, a forum regular. Jon is the winner of IBMA’s first songwriter of the year award. As I told Jon in Nashville, it’s always good to win, but it’s extra special to win the first award of its kind. Congrats, Jon!

Thanks, folks. Needless to say, it was a big thrill, and I’m still absorbing it! I like to think that will encourage our community to take the *work* of songwriting more seriously; I don’t know of many (or, really, any) pickers who would say they don’t ever practice, but just wait for inspiration to strike, but I think there are a lot of folks…[Read more]

That’s a terrific point, Jon. I commit journalism everyday, and I try to do something songwriter-related as well. My notebook is always in my pocket, and my ears and mind are always doing something with a hook or a rhyme scheme. One of the best parts of co-writing, for me anyway, is that it forces me to work on a song at a specific time, whether…[Read more]
