Dwight Yoakam bluegrass project in September

Dwight YoakamSugar Hill Records has Nashville abuzz with the news that country star Dwight Yoakam has recorded a bluegrass album, set for a September 23 release. Titled Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…, the record promises bluegrass arrangements of the Kentucky native’s many top hits.

Sugar Hill is keeping a tight lid on the details for the moment but The Tennessean has reported that the label’s top A&R man, Gary Paczosa, produced the album with Dwight and Jon Randall, using bluegrass all-stars Bryan Sutton, Stuart Duncan, Scott Vestal, Adam Steffey, and Barry Bales as the band.

Known for a resurrection of the Bakersfield twang sound in country music during the 1980s, Yoakam has a reputation as both a singer and songwriter, and claims that he developed a love for bluegrass growing up in eastern Kentucky.

We’ll continue to dig for more information, and are hoping for a chance to discuss bluegrass music with Dwight before the CD drops.
