Carroll County Blues from The Western Flyers

The Western Flyers - Joey McKenzie, Katie Gassman, Gavin KelsoWild Blue Yonder is the debut album from The Western Flyers, a new western swing outfit that features the sparkling fiddle of Katie Glassman, the 2016 Swing Fiddling champion at the National Oldtime Fiddler’s Contest in Weiser, ID.

In addition to Katie’s fiddle, this sizzling hot trio boasts of the services of renowned rhythm guitarist and vocalist Joey McKenzie, and bass prodigy Gavin Kelso. Together they not only perform in this oft-neglected style of Texas music from the 1940s, they do so with a brilliance and panache that will draw in any fans of traditional American string music.

They’ve offered this track from the new album as a sample to tease the bluegrass audience. It’s their super swingy take on the old fiddle tune, Carroll County Blues, one that Bill Monroe brought into the bluegrass realm in 1944, and which remained a signature tune for Chubby Wise until his death in 1996.

If you enjoy high energy fiddle music, you’ll love this one.
