We had extensive coverage last week of the momentous tribute offered to mandolin legend Herschel Sizemore at a benefit concert in Roanoke, VA on February 19. The show featured performances by artists as diverse as Punch Brothers and Seldom Scene, with a special reunion set of the late 1970s edition of Del McCoury & The Dixie Pals, of which Sizemore was a member.
We had also mentioned that a documentary filmmaker, Rick Bowman, was on hand to capture the concert for a project he has started on Herschel, and the tremendous impact his music has had on bluegrass mandolin. Not only did Rick and his team shoot the entire show, he captured hours of interviews backstage which will be woven into an overview of Sizemore’s notable career.
Bowman and videographer Bill Perrine have barely started looking over the mountain of footage they collected, but they did grab a brief snippet for us to showcase what they have in store. This clip shows the Dixie Pals on stage, prior to color correction and with only camera audio. The final film will use a board audio feed that was multi-tracked on site.
Speaking personally, I can imagine few artists more deserving of this sort of commemoration, and look forward to seeing the finished product which is expected in September.
