Gibson Brothers on Bluegrass Country

This weekend’s edition of Bluegrass Master Class on WAMU’s Bluegrass Country will feature a lengthy interview with The Gibson Brothers.

Eric and Leigh sat down with Katy Daley at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival this Spring to talk about their current CD, Help My Brother. Katy tells us that the conversation blossomed out into a career retrospective, touching on the 10 recordings they have made over the course of more than 20 years performing together. The interviews tapes have been mixed down, along with songs from the Gibsons’ deep catalog, into a three-hour special for Bluegrass Country.

Katy sent us a couple of audio samples to give a flavor of the program. This first is about their song, West To Memphis. Katy said that she chose this clip because it has Leigh explaining his singing style, and includes a bit of of their trademark brother banter.

This second clip comes from some of WAMU’s investigative reporting on the Gibsons…

Farm of Yesterday stayed on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart for quite a while. Lee Michael Demsey had interviewed Leigh and Eric so often, they had almost run out of things to say about the song – so he called their parents, Kelley and Shannon Gibson. Since that interview I’ve called her their secret weapon.

Your heart will melt hearing her talk about their upbringing. Suddenly, you get a true appreciation for the words of the song, and everything about them becomes very, very clear.

This special program will air several times this next two weeks, starting on Sunday (6/26) from 3:00-6:00 p.m. (EDT). It will air again the following morning (6/27) during Katy’s regular time slot, 7:00-10:00 a.m., and again on Sunday, July 3 from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

WAMU’s Bluegrass Country can be heard online across the globe at www.bluegrasscountry.org, and in the Washington, DC area on HD Radio WAMU-88.5-Channel2 and on 105.5 FM.
