2015 ResoSummit scholarship went to Adam Birkeland

Rob Ickes with Adam Birkeland, recipient of the 2015 Houston Caldwell Scholarship to ResoSummitThe 2015 Houston Caldwell Scholarship to Rob Ickes’ 9th annual ResoSummit, held November 12-15 in Nashville, went to 15-year-old Adam Birkeland from Duluth, MN. Each year Rob and his ResoSummit co-produer Betty Wheeler, choose a young picker of special merit to attend the weekend instructional event free of charge.

Adam plays back home in his family’s bluegrass Gospel group, Sarah Mae and the Birkeland Boys, with his sister, brother, and dad. They released a CD called It’s Time in 2014 and perform regularly in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Birkeland says that he had a great time at the 2015 event.

“I’ve been playing the instrument for almost three years, and I learned another three years-worth of material in three days at ResoSummit. Plus, I got to see Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes play together live. That was awesome. I’ll never forget that as long as I live.”

The scholarship is named in honor of Hoston Caldwell, a young bluegrass musician from Galax, VA who was lost in a tragic auto accident at 18 years of age. He is remembered each year when the award is given.

Here’s Adam with the band at the Lakes Bluegrass Festival earlier this summer.

If you want to attend ResoSummit, keep an eye on the web site. When registration opens each year, it typically sells out within an hour. The best bet is to sign up for their email notification list to find out when registration begins for 2016.
